MARGARET CHO'S REVOLUTION
directed by Lorene Machado
Documentary
Never one to play it safe, comedian Margaret Cho (NOTORIOUS C.H.O.) scales cultural and political barricades in this live concert performance. Taking aim with some no-holds-barred observations on racism in America, "the axis of evil," the tyranny of fashion and the President's difficulty pronouncing the word "nuclear," Cho incites an inspiring rebellion of wicked laughter and eye-opening insight. Lorene Machado directed, produced and edited this comedic call-to-arms, praised by the Chicago Sun Times as Cho's "strongest show yet!" TVMA (AC, GL) (2004) Color (85 mins)

AIMEE & JAGUAR
directed by Max Färberböck
World Cinema
Felice Schragenheim (Maria Schrader), a Jewish member of the resistance during the Third Reich, was a lesbian, the boldest of a group of friends who led double lives while the war raged around them. When she set her sights on Lilly Wust (Juliane Kohler), the naive wife of a Nazi officer, both became engaged in one of the most perilous love affairs of the war. Former German TV director Max Fdrberbvck, making his directorial debut, adapts Wust's memoirs to the screen in this "lustrously shot, well-acted and immensely moving romantic drama" (San Francisco Chronicle). BUTTERFLY KISS
directed by Michael Winterbottom
World Cinema
When sheltered gas station attendant Miriam (Saskia Reeves) reflects on her attraction to Eunice (Amanda Plummer), an unhinged killer, she simply explains, "The things she did, everyone wants to do in a real way." Plummer, who has excelled playing loopy waifs (HE FISHER KING) and hair-trigger psychos (PULP FICTION), is here a frightening vision of confused anger and vengeance, a possessed, pierced and bruised angel of death. Filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (JUDE, GO NOW) and writer Frank Cottrell Boyce present a violent and unsettlingly graphic tale of love, insanity and codependence in this "road movie that suggests a twisted British answer to Thelma and Louise" - The New York Times. THE COCKETTES
directed by David Weisman and Bill Weber
Documentary
Appeared at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival As the peace-and-love '60s were turning into the sexual-revolution '70s, a rag-tag group of Haight-Ashbury hippies called The Cockettes decided to put on a show. Dressed in outrageous, glitter-festooned thrift-store costumes and high on acid, they performed at midnight movie shows at San Francisco's Pagoda Palace Theater, creating energetic, anarchic, off-the-wall productions that soon caught the eye of the likes of Rex Reed and Truman Capote. Before long, The Cockettes were whisked off to New York and hailed as the toast of the town - until the opening of their show, which was a disastrous flop. David Weissman and Bill Weber's fascinating documentary chronicles the rise and demise of this merry band and features archive performance footage and interviews with, among others, John Waters, who calls the group "insane hippie drag queens on and off the stage." DESERT HEARTS

A landmark when released in 1985, this was the first mainstream film to portray a lesbian love story both romantically and positively. A strait-laced Columbia professor (Helen Shaver) comes to '50s Reno to obtain a quickie divorce and encounters a young, unrestrained casino worker (Patricia Charbonneau) who knows what she wants and thinks nothing of taking risks to get it. The debut feature for both director Donna Deitch and Charbonneau (nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead) also features a classic Patsy Cline soundtrack. EAST PALACE, WEST PALACE
directed by Yuan Zhang
World Cinema
No surprise the Chinese authorities didn't take a fancy to this dramatic assault on traditional morals and taboos with its reasoned plea for gay rights. While homosexuality is not illegal in China, filmmaker Zhang Yuan was punished with a house arrest for making this film. During a one-night interrogation a traditional police officer (Hu Jun) questions a young man (Si Han) arrested during a roundup of gay men in a park near Beijing's Tiananmen Square. What follows is an eye-opening look at a China seldom seen in the west and a memorable mix of "powerful drama and courageous politics" - The New York Times. FIRE
directed by Deepa Mehta
Feature
Organized protests, censorship and violent riots greeted the Indian exhibition of Deepa Mehta's film about two sisters-in-law (Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi) trapped in loveless marriages. Although popularly characterized as "the first Indian film to depict a lesbian relationship," Fire is more substantially an examination of New Delhi's growing middle class, and the tensions that arise when individual desires and the need for self-fulfillment run counter to traditional values. It's the start of another Carolina summer, and it's becoming increasingly clear to Frankie Wheeler, a young local, that she wants more out of life than Myrtle Beach can offer her. She spends her days working in her family's restaurant and wastes her nights hanging out on the boardwalk with her best friend, Nicola, proprietor of a piercing shop and self-proclaimed trouble seeker. Frankie has always played sidekick to Nicola, so neither is prepared when two new arrivals, a young siren hired as a waitress, and a drifter selling tie-dyes out of the back of his van, court only Frankie. In Gary Burns's wry satire of corporate life and modern urban living, four young office workers wager a month's salary in a competition to see who can endure the longest without ever setting foot in the outside world. Tom (Fabrizio Filippo), Sandra (Marya Delver), Randy (Tobias Godson) and Curt (Gordon Currie) have all lasted 24 days as human laboratory rats in their experiment, which has confined them to living within a mall-like modern office, shopping and apartment complex. However, the stresses of this daily existence - under the harsh glare of fluorescent lighting, exposed to mindless piped-in music, nourished by servings from food courts and working in cubicles - is starting to take its toll. Tom believes he has seen a caped superhero just out of the corner of his eye; Sandra is becoming convinced that she is being slowly poisoned by the recycled city air; Randy is giving animal names to all the people in the mall and Curt, better known as the office "slut," is having an attack of raging hormones. And they are not alone: Tom's cubicle mate Brad (Don McKellar), a twenty-year veteran of the corporate world, is starting to staple messages with inspirational mantras on his chest. waydowntown was named Best Canadian Film by the Toronto Film Critics and at the Toronto International Film Festival and was hailed as "a smart, sardonic satire" by the New York Times. Aaarrgghh! Not a channel I receive up here BUT thanks for info ... at least I've a list of titles to hunt for. Goodness, I've only seen 4 of these - I've a ways to go don't I?

P.S. I enjoyed Big Eden ... the townsfolk were the way we can only wish more people were ... you gotta love 'feel good' movies from time to time. - Margo

Thanks for the list! I'll try and catch some when I can.

I agree with Margo: You *must* see Big Eden. It's the happiest film ending ever.

Wow -- thanks for the recs. I get the Sundance channel, but I'm so busy I probably wouldn't have realized all this stuff was on. I saw Margaret Cho live during the Revolution tour and it was amazing.

I did catch The Cockettes while channel-surfing a few months ago, and could not stop watching it. I'm glad I'll be able to go back and watch from the beginning.
