If you've been under a rock this weekend, you may have missed the new Amazon.com "Adult" Policy change. It's exploded allllll over my lists, and livejournals - and now I am putting in my two cents.

I am encouraging my flist to go sign this petition AGAINST the policy change:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/in-protest-at-amazons-new-adult-policy

Why? Read the petition - Briefly summarized - Amazon is making the choice to censor the presentation of certain types of subject matter - ie, gay themed literature, erotica, etc - by removing their sales rankings. Why's this a problem? Amazon ranks its topic searches by sales ranking as a default - which means if the item for sale was a best seller world wide, but was classified as "gay" or "adult" in nature - it would not appear in initial subject searches.

John Barrowman's autobiography is one example of the type of "adult" book this new policy demotes in importance on its own website...grrrr.

Don't understand yet? Need a demonstration of the effect of the policy - look under the cut for a screenshot of a typical subject search - and you'll see the "family-friendly" results that show up in the place of the "removed" adult sales rankings. (You have GOT!!! to be kidding me.)

I swear and be danged - this is f*cking ridiculous, folks. Speak your minds - to Amazon, on this petition site, and spread the word to your friends and family. This needs to change...

Remember.... More than ever - "Yes, We Can"....

ETA - by ALLLLLLL means - go read this entry on ONTD - it gives you an even better idea of who this effects, and how hypocritical Amazon is being....

ETA 2 - Amazon now says this was a "GLITCH" and is working to fix the problem. Supposedly they will be restoring the rankings, etc. (They better, grumble grouch!)
